Luna character design process- 2d to 3d

Luna was the second character to design after Mothra. Like Mothra, Luna's animations had already been completed on a proxy rig so we couldn't deviate too far from the original body shape. She was the more althetic, adventurous and carefree of the characters so her body allowed for a lot of expressive actions. Luna's shape was a lot more humanoid than Mothra, so we toyed around with the idea of Luna being a different species of Mothperson than Mothra, or being in a different part of the Mothperson life cycle - like being a more larvae-like creature. She saw more experimentation with her design but in the end we decided to make her resemble a more adolescent Mothperson, with remnants of her larval state still lingering, like her horns and belly armour.

One of the more out-there ideas I had for Luna was to turn her into a firefly.

A slightly more Bird-like/fuzzy design for Luna, along with the first iteration of the horns. I also played with the idea of her wearing a mask, which didn't end up in the final product.

Luna's more larval-like appearance took shape very early on in development. Here she had more upper-body armour and a fuzzier lower half, like a satyr. It was at this point when I added the horns, which was a very popular choice.

The finalised version of Luna's design. We went with a colour scheme similar to Mothra's, as we decided to make them brother and sister. Luna's colours were bolder, brighter and more contrasting than Mothra's, to match her more energetic personality.
